Claudia Tierney Cup hockey victory

The High School beat Wesley College 2-1 in the final of the Claudia Tierney Cup - the third/fourth place playoff competition for the Premier League - at Three Rock Rovers Hockey Club this afternoon.  The Senior 1 girl's hockey team team conceded an early goal but fought back to level the score before the final whistle in a tense and competitive game.  A further goal in extra time secured a well-deserved victory sparking scenes of jubilation amongst a large group of vocal supporters to match those recorded when The High School last won the trophy in 2012.

The High School had advanced to the final by beating Loreto Abbey, Dalkey 3-0 last Thursday.  The Senior 1 team enjoyed a strong start by taking the lead within the first two minutes when a Form 5 pupil intercepted a Loreto hit out and finished superbly into the back of the net.  A short time later a second goal came through a Form 6 pupil giving the girls a 2-0 half-time lead.  The High School closed out the tie with their third goal early in the second half when another Form 5 pupil made a break down the left, beating the entire back line to score.  The final goal came late in the second half after The High School defence dealt efficiently with some late pressure from the Loreto attack.  You can trace the route to the final here and read a full report of the semi-final match here.

Congratulations to all the players involved with this significant achievement for the Senior 1 girl's hockey team; many thanks to the coaches for their advice and to the spectators for their consistent support throughout the league campaign.
