Green-Schools Ireland, co-ordinated by An Taisce and operating in over 90% of Irish schools, is an environmental programme whereby students work together and alongside the school’s management to encourage and maintain environmentally-friendly habits and positive whole-school practice. Once a Green-Schools committee is formed, we investigate how The High School is addressing issues within a given theme, implementing actions and reviewing our progress throughout the year. We also highlight links with the curriculum wherever possible and work to inform and involve the broader school community. Notable recent initiatives range from regular recycling projects to a walk/cycle to school day and from a school Spring Clean to a themed awareness week. Having been awarded a second Green flag (for our work on Energy), our Green Schools committee is now preparing to look at the next theme - Water. Green-Schools meets before classes every second Thursday and is open to any student enthusiastic about environmental issues.
