Form 6 Geography trip to Shankill
6W recently went
to Shankill beach accompanied by their teacher, Mr Swan, to complete the
requisite field investigations for the revised Geography syllabus. Among
the activities were sketching the beach profile, measuring and recording
the profile of the beach from shore to cliff, measuring the cliff
height, analysing beach material to identify rock shape, size, type and
origin, measuring the speed and direction of longshore drift (offshore
current).
Fireworks
As explosive substances, fireworks
(including bangers) are dangerous, illegal and can cause serious injury.
Having anything to do with fireworks on the school premises (including
possessing them) can lead to suspension from school. We ask for your
cooperation.
Within the last few weeks, in Dublin, a girl has already been seriously
injured by a banger, resulting in the need for plastic surgery. The pain
of such a burn injury must be intense. Because fireworks are illegal in
Ireland and there are no checks on standards, many of those on sale are
sub-standard and dangerous. If you are setting them off at Halloween at
home, please be very careful and use a taper or lighting stick to light
them so that they are nowhere near your hands. Never hold a firework
while lighting it and never throw it at another person. Don't bend over
fireworks while lighting them or if you think they haven't lit properly,
as they may explode in your eyes.
Remember the misery caused to thousands of pets, wild animals and birds
by the noise of fireworks.
Maximum points in the Leaving
Congratulations to Frank Moriarty who
achieved maximum points this year in the Leaving Certificate. Frank was
one of only 102 candidates nationwide to achieve such high points.

Simon Fun Run
We had 95 pupils who entered the Simon
Fun Run on Sunday. Congratulations to you all and a big thank you for
taking part. We hope we can win the schools team prize again this year
for collecting the most sponsorship money. Pupils have two weeks to
collect their money and leave it in to Mr McClure in A4.
Help to house the homeless
Habitat for Humanity is a charity which
builds houses for people living in very poor housing conditions. To
date, they have housed over 1 million people in 200,000 houses. This
year, The High School is sending a team to Romania to spend ten days
building houses at Easter. To cover the high costs of the houses and
some of the group's travel costs, we will be raising funds during the
year.
The group is running the Dublin Minithon at 9.20 a.m. on Monday 30
October. We are looking for additional volunteers to run the Minithon
and to raise funds on behalf of Habitat for Humanity. Would all those
interested please contact Ms Thorp in B2 for entry and sponsorship
forms.
