Senior 1st girls hockey team win final
Although we beat Loreto Dalkey 4-3 in the
semi-final we felt we didn’t give our best performance and we were
determined to improve on our game with high hopes for the Plate final
against Wesley.
As soon as the starting whistle blew, we took control of the game,
surging forward with some great off-the-ball running and passing from
our attackers. Holding possession for long lengths and keeping the ball
in the Wesley half of the pitch, it wasn’t long until Susan McRann
scored our opening goal during a short corner. After more great play our
lead was doubled with another goal from Susan and we narrowly missed out
on a third when Maoliosa Nugent’s short corner attempt was disallowed.
Wesley had their chances too but we succeeded in keeping them at bay,
going into the break with a 2-0 lead.
We definitely felt more pressure in the second half as Wesley pushed
more and more players forward and soon they managed to squeeze a goal
from one of their numerous short corner efforts, bringing the score to a
nail biting 2-1. Although everyone was a little on edge we held strong
and Wesley were unable to break through our defences again.
Thanks must be given to Ms.Jones for all the time and dedication she has
given the team - her help and encouragement has been invaluable. We
would also like to thank Ali Meeke for her help before the match and our
captain Una McSharry for her inspiring words! It has been a great end to
our season!

Senior boys hockey trophy final
The senior boys played against Kilkenny
College in the first ever senior Trophy final on Wednesday the 3rd of
March. To reach the final High School had to get past 2 premier division
sides in Mt Temple and Sutton Park.
High School were not favorites for this game but none the less went into
the game very confident. This confidence was well placed as High School
matched the premier team in every respect. Kilkenny took the lead with a
well taken goal only for High School to reply with a drag flick from
Shane O’ Donoghue.
Both teams had chances and some solid goalkeeping from Gareth Carragher
and excellent defense work from Robbie McGuiness, Niall O’Leary and Sam
Williamson kept the scores level. A turnover at the top of the circle
saw Kilkenny score against the run of play. High School upped the tempo
through Steven Reid, Ryan O’Malley and lain Irvine to force some short
corners.
It was not until the last minute from some good one two passes by Shane
and Guy that High School got a penalty corner. This was converted by
Shane to draw level and the final whistle sounded. The game went to
extra time with neither team having any real chances.
Penalty strokes resulted and High School came out the wrong side after
sudden death. Congratulations to the team for an excellent performance
of skill and intensity in keeping with the high standards set by High
School hockey teams of the past.
Gareth Carragher
Well done also to the team on reaching the semi-final of the Leinster
Cup.
Model United Nations
Last weekend saw 14 High School students
representing 3 countries – Uganda, Palestine and Spain - in the 3rd
Wesley College Dublin Model United Nations.
On Friday evening delegates enjoyed a welcome banquet followed by
lobbying with fellow delegates in their committees. Evening
entertainment was the Jazz café where delegates had the opportunity to
socialise and meet delegates from other schools and countries.
Committees followed by General Assembly were the order of the day on
Saturday, with questions such as International Natural Disaster
Response, Access to Medication, Managing the Global Economic Crisis
being debated.
High School students were outstanding in their debate with three
delegates being awarded individual awards – Jessica Patterson – Best
Delegate, Spain; Aisling Reina – Commended Delegate, Spain ; Julie
Farrell – Commended Delegate, Uganda - and Spain being awarded commended
delegation.
This was an excellent achievement and highlights the standards of debate
shown by our students. Well done to all those who took part.

Curly Wurlys are awesome
(Or, in this case, Junior Drama). This
year’s Junior Play is two plays, yes you read that correctly, two for
the price of one! They have been written specially for HSD:
See Stargazing and Shoegazing- Thursday 25 March 8, 2010 at 8 p.m. in
The Reynolds Hall, tickets €3 (student) and €6 (adult).
We are going to need a lot of enthusiastic people in the audience, so
that’s where you come in. Students of all ages, parents, friends and
teachers, make sure you buy your ticket which will be on sale in the
school in the week before the shows.
If you like the X-Factor, then you’ll love Stargazers, which is pretty
much the same thing, except better. Shoegazers is less glitzy and more
about life itself. They’re both excellent plays and are worth going to.
(Curly Wurlys are awesome will be mentioned in one of the plays.
