Senior girls hockey cup final

Last Tuesday was the final of the Leinster Senior Hockey Cup Final between Alexandra College and The High School in Three Rock. We had trained very hard and were very confident going into the match, but we knew it would be a hard contest. Unfortunately Alex got an early goal, however I came back to equalise with a goal from a short corner.

Disappointingly at half time, the score was 3-1 and going into the second half, we were determined it wouldn’t stay that way. Holly Warren joined the attacking midfields which proved very successful, bringing the score to 3-2. This became a very exciting time of the game with High School’s talented Christine Boyle making great runs on the right, and Nikki Daly with Valerie Sexton dodging past Alex defenders on the left, but unfortunately we were denied another score, due to a strong Alex defence. High School’s defence remained solid at this time led by Grace, Katie, Gemma and Catherine. Suddenly Alex broke through which resulted in a short corner, ending our cup winning dreams.

We would like to sincerely thank Mr Fitzpatrick for all his hard work and inspiration throughout the year, we couldn’t have got there without him. A special thank you to Mrs Mellon who, as the centre of hockey in the High School has been a source of motivation and encouragement all along the way. A big thanks to all the supporters who were very encouraging, and came out to support us on numerous occasions. Thanks also to all the members of staff who were very helpful and co-operative throughout our journey, particularly Mr Duffy.

As captain of the 1st XI, I would like to take this opportunity to thank each of my team members who have been absolutely wonderful and a pleasure to play hockey with. I feel proud and honoured to be part of such a brilliant team, and I wish you all the best of luck for next year.

Inter Schools Music Festival

Congratulations to the orchestra which was placed joint second, with first class honours, after an excellent performance of Faure's "Sicilienne". Also, well done to Patrick King (1W) who won 1st place in the Under 14 clarinet and 2nd place in the Under 14 piano, and to Ian Thom who obtained first class honours in the Over 16 wind competition.

Aubrey Flegg visits High School

Aubrey Flegg an award-winning author of The Cinnamon Tree visited several first year classes on Tuesday of World Book Week. A former geologist, Aubrey Flegg told us of his travels to Kenya and Angola, which helped him to write a novel raising mines awareness. Originally, Flegg visited Angola to study rocks but when he saw children traumatised by mines he decided to write The Cinnamon Tree. He told us how he was inspired by Princess Diana’s mine awareness work to write his excellent book. The Cinnamon Tree is about a young girl, Yola Abonda and her struggle to overcome a horrific mine-related injury and to work destroying mines. He told us about the fictional organisation Yola works for, Northern People’s Aid, which was based on a real de-mining organisation, Norwegian People’s Aid. He passed around a mine he had salvaged and expressed his obvious anger at the arms control laws. Flegg read the first chapter of his book and really made an impression on the classes he talked to. Mr. Duffy even paid a visit taking pictures for the newsletter! Unfortunately we didn’t have enough time to ask Mr. Flegg awkward questions at the end, but an excellent talk by Mr. Flegg and a great book also.

Basketball quarter final

The Minor Girls Basketball team played Balbriggan in the quarterfinals for the South Dublin Basketball League on Friday 4th March. The match was very tense and exciting. At full-time we were drawing 20-20 we had to play three minutes of extra time to decide a winner but still after three minutes of hard work by both teams we were still drawing. Another three minutes of extra time was added on and after some tremendous work by our team Aoife Gordon scored the winning basket, which now puts us into the semi-final. I would like to say a huge thank you to all the team for their hard work.
