Welcome back!

During the summer Ms Lynch, Mr Clarke and Ms Smyth resigned during the summer holidays. We wish them well in their new positions. Mr Wright is ill at the moment and will be absent for a few weeks.
Mr Clarke's resignation was the day before term opened so unfortunately we are short of one Guidance Counsellor at the moment but hope to fill that vacancy shortly.
We welcome the following new staff (in some cases not so new!) - Ms Rugg, French, hockey; Ms Lyons, resource; Mr Sheehan, Construction Studies, Technical Graphics; Ms Sweeney, Art, replacing Ms Galligan while on leave; Dr de Brit, Geography, Geology, replacing Mr Wright temporarily; Mr Rankin, Geography, Mr Dunne, English, History; Mr Draper, Art; Mrs Jackson (Special Needs Assistant); Mr Critchley (Laboratory technician and basketball coach). We also welcome back after leave - Ms Hearne and Ms Toolan.
A great deal of work has been completed during the summer. The two new astroturf pitches have been completed on time and are in use. Insulation and recovering of the roof of the school will be completed in about a week or so.
General maintenance work has included the painting of classrooms on the C floor, flooring in A3 and the library, painting of corridors and changing rooms, renewal of some desks and chairs, window blinds, white boards, pin boards etc., fencing on way to back gate.
All of these jobs were difficult to complete within the few weeks between the end of the exams and the beginning of term and we owe our gratitude to Administrator, John Davis, and Chairman of the Grounds & Property Committee, Dr John Reid.

Brendan Quinn

Mr Quinn (top right) retired at the end of last term and we wish him the very best in the future. He joined the staff in 1978 and taught French, German and Spanish, while also being proficient in a number of other languages. Mr Quinn coached rugby and cricket for many years and supervised trips to the continent which many pupils thoroughly enjoyed. He served as a Form Teacher, responsible for discipline and welfare, as coordinator of continental exchange links and, in recent years as coordinator of the language department, of subject choice administration and of scholarships, as an Assistant Principal.

European hockey champion

Congratulations to Shane (middle right) who represented Ireland on the Under 18 team at the Euro Nations Trophy in Vienna during July. Shane scored five goals during the tournament and the team beat France 5-3 in the final to win the European trophy.
Shane has also recently been selected for the Ireland senior A squad and is the youngest player ever to make this selection.

Salters' Festival of Chemistry, Trinity College Dublin

Lorcan Daly (1WH last year), Laura Heaton (1Q), Zephan Kavanagh (1Q) and Julie O'Brien (1Q) came third in the University Challenge competition at the end of last term, out of 18 schools. Well done!

Basketball selection

Congratulations to Luke Thompson (3rd year) who represented Ireland in Under 16 basketball at the European championships this summer.

Personal accident insurance does not cover skiing, caving, hillwalking, rock climbing

Our insurers have notified us that cover is not available on the personal accident insurance which the school takes out for all pupils for skiing, hill-walking, rock climbing or caving. Parents should see that their own family personal accident insurance policies cover these activities if a pupil is participating.

Foundation Day initiative awards

These are awarded at the Prize Distribution and are open to pupils of Forms 3 to 6. They are awarded to up to 3 students who have shown initiative, organisational ability or administrative ability in starting or promoting a school activity.
To be eligible for a prize a student must be nominated in writing by two other students with a short statement of the reasons for the nomination. Please give nominations to Ms Saville (A10) by Friday 18 September.
