Changes in the
absence and late system
From tomorrow, please hand in all late
and absence notes to the Office, instead of the Nurse. If you are late,
please check in with the Prefects up to 9.15 and with the Office after
9.15 a.m. Please ensure that you do check in if you are late. Otherwise
you will be recorded as absent and sanctions will be applied when no
absence excuse is received.

‘A Moment of Forever’
The troupe of actors this year
representing the very best of High School’s young acting talent at St
Andrew’s One Act Play competition played true to their skill as actors
in the play, ‘Lunch in Venice’ by Nick Dear. The play tells the story of
five teenagers on a cultural trip to Venice; but through each
character’s words and experiences, a darker, more chilling idea than
that of an ordinary school trip is slowly revealed to the audience, one
telling of where the students have truly come to exist and what horrors
have happened to them. This play captures ‘a moment of forever’.
The five teenagers were- Harley (Cameron Brownlee, who played this part
with a great confidence and remarkable vanity that was much needed by
the part), Bianca (Niamh Sleator, beautifully playing the teenage girl
living in the moment of true love- forever), Emmie (Caoimhe Carty, who
did an honest and believable performance of this intriguing character),
Ben (Des Cox winning Best Actor for his insightful role) and Conrad (Eoin
Silke, who was wonderfully ‘in touch with his inner creep’ for this
role). Completing the cast were the French socialite, Vivi, (played by
Sarah Corbin, who was marked out for her chilling performance of a woman
in denial) and the acrobat, Danny Finn (who was awarded with a Merit
Certificate for his performance). Rachel O’Byrne provided the musical
accompaniment for this play.
Their artistic director, Robert Bradish (6th year), according to the
Judges, Christine Poulter and Patrick Sutton, created a ‘stylised’ and
‘beautifully crafted’ play and successfully directed a very moving cast
of characters and rightly deserved the Merit Certificate awarded to him
for his art.
The cast would like to extend their thanks for all the effort and
support of Ms Fitzgerald, Ms Milne, Ms Breen (who deserves special
mention in this writer’s opinion for her choreography of the haunting
opening and closing sequences), Ms Killane and Ms Boyce, for helping
with their Italian. Also, thanks from the cast to Hannah Jennings and
Jill Harding for all they have done for the production.

World Book Day
Once again The High School, among many
other schools around the world, has celebrated World Book Day. Thanks to
Mrs King in the Library all the students had a brilliant time entering
competitions, reading and watching DVDs throughout the day. Many
teachers brought their classes up to view the wonderful displays on
show. We must say that if World Book Day was this good now, we can't
wait until next year!

Burrowes, Mrs King and author Siobhan Parkinson
