Abolish the tie - are you mad?

A proposal for uniform change was discussed recently at a meeting of the school council with the Principal. The abolition of the tie for boys and girls is being considered.

It is also proposed that a crested white shirt be adopted to be offered in three types – long sleeved formal collar (as currently worn), long sleeved formal revere collar (a blouse type collar normally worn by girls), short sleeved polo. Any type could be worn at any stage of the year. All shirts would have small marking on the collar to show that they are school shirts. The shirts would be straight cut across the bottom so that wearing them inside or outside trousers/skirt when the jumper is not worn would not look untidy. They would cost a little more than standard shirts (maybe about €16) but would look much better.

A majority of the girls on the school council thought the abolition of the tie was a good idea while a larger majority of boys thought it was not. An idea emerged in discussion that the tie could be made optional but if not worn properly and with pride in the school, its teams and representatives, it would be confiscated. This is being further considered and a survey will be conducted by the school council shortly to ascertain pupils' opinions. There was broad support for the crested shirt.

Staff and parent representatives have also been consulted prior to discussion of these proposals with the council and if any individual parent wishes to contribute views to this process, please write in to the Principal. A decision will be made in January to allow for the uniform suppliers to adjust their orders and the change will be implemented in September, if any change is to be made.

Fairtrade fair

Business was brisk at the fair on Saturday and we were delighted to see so many people enjoying the atmosphere. We sold over €3,500 of fairly traded goods and €1500 of Concern Gifts of Hope to help families in the developing world to become self-sufficient. Congratulations to everyone who helped to make the fair so successful!  CLICK ON THE PHOTO TO SEE A LARGER VERSION

Simon Community Christmas food appeal

The Simon Community is an organisation which helps homeless people. They provide shelter, soup and meals for people who are living on the streets and have no accommodation. Each year in school we have a collection of foodstuffs which we bring down to the Night Shelter. Non-perishable items such as tea, coffee, soups, tins are ideal. Last year we filled 20 boxes and hopefully we can improve on that this year - so we would ask you to please help. Remember to ask at home and bring your contribution to A4. Thanks!

Deck shoes

Pupils are reminded that deck/boat shoes are not uniform items and may not be worn to school. If you are currently wearing them, please replace them with formal shoes during the holidays.
