Prize Day
Prize Day took place on Wednesday 24 October. The
guest speaker was Dr Peter Wyse Jackson, Director of the National
Botanical Gardens. In his speech he mentioned the work conducted at the
gardens in Glasnevin and the importance of plants to our existence. Some
of the examples he gave were our food, clothes, energy and medicines.
Pointing out that a third of all plant species were already very rare or
extinct, he encouraged pupils to become conservationists, scientists and
environmentalists in their careers.
The Principal spoke about the increasing
globalisation of society, with Ireland now ranked as the most globalised
society in the world. He encouraged the audience to challenge some of
their accepted norms with regard to progress and questioned whether the
marketisation and emphasis on economic growth that have accompanied
globalisation are sufficient goals for humanity. "We must not allow
ourselves to be oppressed by technology and economic success. These are
both only tools for us to use in our search for truth and understanding
of ourselves. Education is about gaining these insights and we must
never lose sight of the value of the interaction of pupil with pupil,
pupil with parent and pupil with teacher in developing that insight.
There can be no replacement for good quality human interaction and
discussion in developing who we are."
Choir and orchestra performances were greatly enjoyed
and everybody adjourned for supper in the dining hall afterwards.
Thanks to everybody who helped to prepare this
occasion - grounds and caretaking staff, office staff, catering staff,
teaching staff, prefects, etc. Particular thanks to Ms Saville who
organises the Prize List and gathers the prizes with Mrs King's
assistance. |

Archaeological site
In 1J History class we had been studying archaeology
with Mr Barry and Ms Graham. Niall Mason, a member of our class, made a
model of a site using a box filled with soil and clay. The box was
divided into four sections. Archaeology involves slowly digging down
into each section, level by level, using tools such as trowels and
hammers. When artefacts are found, they are cleaned with a toothbrush so
as not to damage them. In the box we found pottery, deer antlers and
jewellry. We really enjoyed working on the project - it was lots of fun.
