Girls basketball champions - well done!
The High School Cadette team beat Rockford in the semi-final to reach the League Final against Cluny, in the Basketball Arena. A great start to the game saw The High School heading into the 2nd quarter 11-5. After some great free throw shooting by Katie Murtagh we were ahead by 8pts at the start of the second half. Beth Kelly’s brilliant shooting, as always, helped us maintain our lead throughout the game. We managed to withstand the pressure defence of Cluny and successfully ended the game 37 - 30. The team would like to thank our wonderful coach Kate Kavanagh and all our supporters. Julie Kavanagh
Senior Basketball South Dublin B League Final Tensions were high in the national basketball arena on Monday, 21st March as an opening shot from Julie Kavanagh sailed through the basket to secure 3 points, and an early lead for the High School team. Ballinteer Community School soon retaliated, proving to be a tough opposition. However with scores from Katy-Jane Barry, Caitriona Ryan, Jenny Murphy, Aisling Hughes, Beth Kelly and significantly Julie Kavanagh, High School conserved their lead, finishing the half at 35-17. Despite a strong offence from Ballinteer in the second half, High school prevailed, with a final score of 30-50, thanks to impressive defence from the likes of Holly Warren and Robin Fitzpatrick. Afterwards every member of the team received a medal at the awards ceremony and the school was presented with a plaque in honour of the victory. We would like to thank the school, our coach Ms Kavanagh, and everyone who took the time to support the team, on behalf of the senior basketball team. Una Ni Eigeartaigh, Ruth Roseingrave Ireland be proud competition results
Thanks to the people who entered our competition! Our judges have laboured through the holidays to consider the entries and bring you the results today. It was a hard task, given the quality and originality of the entries and really many more deserved to win prizes as well, but we only have three, so here are the winners: Lara Madden, 1WK - Lara sent in dozens of entries and among them were the generosity of the Irish to causes like the Tsunami appeal, our neutrality and Dana/Daniel O'Donnell - the two worst singers in the world! Jo Geoghegan of 2D - Jo sent in 18 entries and emphasised our language, the fact that we drink more tea per head than any other country in the world, our cultural richness (mentioned The Corrs, Thin Lizzy, The Thrills, Seamus Heaney, Claire Hennessy), our free art galleries and Colin Farrell! Melanie Whelan, Form 6 - Melanie sent in 16 entries and continued the tea theme with the emphasis on Barry's. She also mentioned Oscar Wilde, the prowess of the Irish at building projects all over the world and our high number of Nobel laureates for the size of our population. Her winning entry was her pride in strong Irish women such as Grainne O'Malley, Queen Meabh and Countess Markievicz. Each of the above wins a €20 voucher for Golden Discs which may be collected at the office. We are going to continue to publish other entries over the coming weeks to show how thoughtful people were and how much there is of which we can be proud!
