Orchestra tour to Prague

Congratulations to the orchestra who received a highly commended certificate (3rd place) at the Inter Schools Musical festival on Saturday, playing Hungarian Dance No 5 by Brahms. The competition was won by Belvedere College in a very competitive field. Congratulations also to Patrick King who won the Over 16 piano solo competition.

During the Easter holidays, the orchestra (accompanied by their conductor Ms White, and also Mr McBride, Ms Killane and Mr O'Hanlon) will be touring to Prague. They will perform two public concerts and will have a guided tour of Prague, an opportunity to go ice-skating, a visit to the wonderful Prague Castle and a boat trip on the river Vltava. We wish them the very best of success.

Ski trip to New Hampshire

This year’s Ski Trip to New Hampshire was most successful, thanks in no small measure to the 80 inches (200cm) of snow that fell in the month of December. Pupils and staff enjoyed the pleasure of skiing and snowboarding on powder snow. With no serious injuries and just one trip to First Aid we all made the most of our time on the slopes of Loon Mountain or "Gravity’s Playground" as our bus driver Dave calls it. Those who had not skied before soon mastered the techniques: how not to fall of the chair lift; how not to loose your ski; how best to take out three pupils in one go.

There were those who advanced to doing jumps and a few hardy individuals who got as far as tree skiing. The idea here is to ski between the trees rather than up them or through them (Mr. McBride please note!).

Our hotel was comfortable and welcoming as usual. The hot tub and swimming pool were in great demand to ease away the aches and pains. The introduction of the new winter sport of rolling in the snow in swimming togs and then jumping in the hot tub may take some time to catch on and I doubt if it will ever reach Olympic status.

Our traditional shopping trip and stop off in Boston allowed the shopaholics amongst us to take advantage of the favourable exchange rate. But the advice "it’s only a bargain if you need it" seemed to fall on deaf ears in many cases. I would like to pay tribute to the pupils who were all extremely cooperative and to thank Ms. Lynch, Ms Fahey, Mr Flynn and Mr McBride who helped organise the trip and took such good care of everyone.
M.C. Cryan.
