HSD first in Simon
fundraising
In October, 49 pupils from the school
volunteered to run in the Simon Community fundraising run in the Phoenix
Park. They collected a total of €3967.45 which was a new record for a
school team and was the most raised by any of the schools participating.
The picture shows the organisers handing over
the cheque to Sinead Ni Mhaille of the Dublin Simon Community. Well done
to all who participated and a big thank you to all their generous
sponsors! |

Young Scientist Exhibition tour
When 1H and 1R arrived at the exhibition
we couldn't believe our eyes when we saw Ray Darcy, who was very kind
and enthusiastic about what all the young people had to say. As we
walked on seeing all the amazing and encouraging projects, we found a
zoo stand and we got to see and hold interesting animals which were new
to us. We also saw many projects to do with the body and with safety. I
speak for all my friends when I say the exhibition was more than we ever
imagined. We would like to thank Mr Gill and Dr Whitford for bringing
us. Also, well done to the people from HSD who entered - their projects
were very intriguing.

Summer uniform change
When the date for summer uniform is
announced (usually early April), it will consist this year (on a trial
basis) of plain white open neck polo/aertex shirt/blouse, with no logos,
stripes, decorations etc, long or short sleeved. Shirts may be worn
inside or outside trousers/skirt during the summer uniform period. The
tie will not be worn during the period of summer uniform. School jumper
will be optional, also during that period. There will not be an option
to continue wearing winter uniform. Plain white polo/aertex shirts may
be purchased at our uniform suppliers or at any major outlet. Winter
uniform will resume at a date to be announced during the autumn and will
remain unchanged. Students should not wear the same shirts for sports as
during school hours, for reasons of hygiene.

JCT rugby cup matches
High School’s Juniors began their
campaign in the first round of the Fr. Godfrey Cup with a game against
their old rivals Wesley at a wind-swept Kilternan. In a game that was
dictated by the elements, Josh Purcell managed to score an opportunistic
individual try that Ciaran Collins failed to convert. The second half
was to see Wesley having most of the possession and scored a deserved
try ten minutes into the second half, again failing to convert. Wesley
then scored a penalty to lead 8-5 with five minutes on the clock. High
School then rallied with Conor O’Donnell, Stephen Carter and Ian Levine
all leading by example. A number of quickly taken penalties eventually
saw Thomas Emo score an unconverted try after great handling from High
School. There was still time for Wesley to come back and win two more
penalties under the posts. In a day not suited for kicking the Wesley
out-half missed both last-minute kicks and High School held out in a
thrilling finale to win 10-8.
The Juniors had an added incentive to win in the quarter final since our
SCT had lost against Mt. Temple the previous week. In fine conditions at
Castleknock College, High School began the game under pressure from a
determined Mount Temple. Eventually High School managed to break out of
their half and finally began to play the rugby they were capable of. A
well worked try from Shay Arias-Paz went unconverted and Conor O’Donnell
and Sean O’Riordan also went close. The second half began as the first
had left off with continued pressure from High School. Stephen Carter
was denied an excellent try after accidental offside but Sam Moore
scored after more great work from the High School pack. Ciaran Collins
came close with the conversion and two penalties, even hitting the post,
but was unsuccessful. After withstanding some late pressure from Mt.
Temple, High School held out for a fine win, a place in the semi-final
of the Fr. Godfrey Cup and a first round meeting with Blackrock in
Donnybrook in the Leinster Cup. |
