Reverend Wilbert Gourley

It is with great sadness that we record the death of Rev Wilbert Gourley, rector of Zion Parish, on 19 May 2010. Rev Gourley had been rector of Zion since 1988. He was appointed to the Board of Governors of The High School the following year. He served in that capacity throughout the remainder of his life and in recent years was a member of our Education Committee, where he was interested to know the detail of how policy was developed at the school and to make his own valuable contribution. On many occasions, Wilbert promoted the interests of the school in public, sometimes issuing a robust defence of a school he believed in when it was the subject of unwarranted or uninformed criticism.
He was a frequent and welcome visitor to morning assembly where he delivered short, succinct, dignified and yet inspirational messages to junior and senior pupils, varying the sophistication of his topic according to the age group he was addressing. He knew his audience and they liked and respected him. He would often have a cheery word with one of his parishioners or a former pupil of his national school as he departed. We will miss him greatly. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends.
