Oh Boy!

Congratulations to everybody involved in this superb musical production on a very professional and enjoyable night for all who attended!

With strong echoes of "Footloose", this original production, scripted by Peter Prendergast and Maeve McKevitt, portrays a 1950s Irish town where modern dancing and music have been banned by the town council. Teenager Finn Stark (Josh Burdon) and his mother Christina (Shona O'Toole) return from America where she had to flee to as a single parent and Finn begins to challenge the accepted norms of Ballyceol.

Against the wishes of the council, a dance is arranged outside the town limits where the music of Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis and other rock 'n roll greats will be enjoyed. Finn's impassioned pleas, along with those of his sweetheart Kate (Aislinn Coghlan), have won over her father (Alex Conroy), one of the councillors, and he turns up to protect the occasion, ensuring that everybody lives happily ever after.

The performances were all confident, with the sparky American teen played strongly by Josh Burdon and some excellent melodrama from Aislinn, the two lead roles. The comedy touch provided by the goofy Daniel Dooley (Jack O'Kennedy) who is madly in love with Tess (Catriona Grimes) and who is eventually trained as a "cool guy" who can actually dance, was hilarious and played very effectively; as indeed were the "local heroes" (in their own minds) played by James Barber and Mark Savage, who try to humiliate Finn and prevent Kate from changing boyfriends.

Not everybody can be mentioned in such a short article but all of the performances were excellent, as was the dancing and choreography (Ciara Breen). Great credit goes to the whole backstage crew for seamless performances and obviously to student producers Joan Somers Donnelly and Mark Savage. Maeve McKevitt's accomplished direction spoke for itself.
