Junior A through to semi-final!
Congratulations to the Junior A hockey
girls who have made it through to the semi-final of the Leinster Cup
competition. The quarter-final was a tense match out in Bray. High
School started strong and were on top during the match but found it
difficult to actually get the ball into the net due to a strong
performance from the Bray keeper. Nerves were beginning to show as the
match went into extra time. High School remained determined to win and
just before half time (of extra time) a super goal from Eva Nugent put
us ahead. This was all it took as the final whistle blew 8 minutes
later. Well done!! |

Science week
Last week saw the inaugural High School
science week with a collection of events. Form 1 excelled themselves by
producing a range of informative and eye-catching posters on the theme
of "Energy". A lunchtime chemistry demonstration session was held amidst
much smoke and stunning visual effects. The finale of the week was the
eagerly awaited paper airplane competition which followed hard-won heats
during the week. The winners were emphatically named as Thomas Wyse
Jackson (Form 1), Colm Moran (Form 2) and Michael McNulty (Form 3).
Congratulations for their ingenuity and talent in aeronautical design.
Thanks to all who took part and to Mr McBride, Mr Gill, Ms Watson, Ms
Thorp, Ms Hannon and Dr Whitford for organising the activities during
the week. |

Habitat for Humanity
The Habitat team have been continuing
their fundraising and, thanks to the generosity of all concerned, are
within sight of reaching their original target of €30,000. The two
recent events were very successful, i.e. the non-uniform day and the
Toblerone raffle. |

4L and 4S mid-winter swim swim
On the 20th of December, students from 4L
and 4S went swimming in Sandycove at the Forty Foot in aid of St. Luke’s
Hospital. Having submitted our sponsorship cards and committed
ourselves, we had mixed conversations in school that morning. Some
insisted that they would be the first to jump in. Some were adamant that
the water would kill them. There were even a select few (who
unfortunately must remain nameless) that cowered and said that they
wouldn’t be getting in at all. We arrived at the Forty Foot at around
10:20 on the school buses and an additional coach provided (for free) by
Finnegans of Bray. We had barely arrived at the pier before the first
splashes could be heard. The splashes were generally followed by
screams, snouts, and various other sounds too obscene to mention here.
The swimmers demonstrated many approaches to getting in. Most people
simply charged in from the edge, wanting to get it over with quickly.
The fearless took to the more elegant method of diving in. A few
sensible people walked in from the side, and the aforementioned cowards
just sat at the side fully clothed (not to mention warm). Finally we all
came to our senses and got out. We were then greeted with a much need
cup of hot chocolate each after we had dried off and warmed up. In total
the two classes collectively managed to raise €2710 for St. Luke’s. On
behalf of everyone who took part, I would like to thank all of the
teachers involved, and Finnegans of Bray for providing their coach free
of charge in aid of this important cause.
