Above: The Bonwits Prize DayThe Prize Distribution and Parents' Evening took place recently, with Professor Richard O'Kennedy as the guest speaker. Professor O'Kennedy is the Professor of Biological Sciences at Dublin City University. The evening was very well attended with barely an empty seat and the audience enjoyed choir and orchestral performances. The Principal opened the evening by welcoming our guest and complimenting him on his exceptional work with young people in the field of Science, through a wide variety of voluntary organisations. Professor O'Kennedy spoke of his great enjoyment of science and of the potential for improving the human condition through taking up a scientific career. He strongly encouraged High School students to consider a future in science, pointing out that Ireland needs an ever increasing number of science graduates in order not to lose vital jobs to other countries.
American footballKevin Finnegan is currently playing American Football for the Dublin Rebels team. They won the shamrock bowl and Euro championship last year. Next summer he is travelling to Georgia College football camp to work towards obtaining a football scholarship. Best of luck, Kevin! Concern debatesWell done to the High School team who won the debate against St Colmcille's last week by a majority decision on the motion that "Genetically modified food is unnecessary in the fight against world hunger". The team was Una ni hEigeartaigh (captain), Harry McEvansoneya, Roxanne Brownlee and Ruth Rosengrave. Poppy appealWe have received a message of thanks from the Irish Poppy Appeal which raised €268.12 in this school. Fair Trade FairThe injustice of international trade means that many products we import have been produced by people working in poor conditions for low wages. What we can do is favour those products which have been fairly traded. Alternative trading organisations, like Oxfam Trading, Traidcraft, Equal Exchange and Tearcraft exist as an alternative to the world trading system. The Fairtrade Foundation is trying to bring the principles of fair trade into mainstream shopping by awarding the Fairtrade mark to those products independently judged to have been fairly traded. There will be a Christmas Fair Trade Fair held in the school on Saturday 6 December. All goods on sale will be Fair Trade goods, and it is a perfect opportunity to do some Christmas shopping. Material held overThanks to all contributors this week. Some material has been held over due to lack of space. Sport this weekWell done to the winners of the senior team cross country race at a recent Leinster Schools league race in Blackrock. All four finished in the top ten.
