Teacher retirements

At the end of this school year, we will be losing four of our longest serving teachers.

Mrs J. Geoghegan joined the staff in 1976 as a teacher of Science and Biology, was a form teacher, Year Head, assisted with the running of Upper Sixth and has been Deputy Principal for five years.

Mr R. McMullen came to the school in 1970 and has taught French and German in addition to serving as Year Head, Coordinator of the Modern Language Department and contributing strongly in the past to rugby coaching. Mr McMullen has been involved in cricket coaching throughout his career and has been in charge of boys' cricket for many years.

Mr M. Hilliard was a pupil at the school and returned as a teacher in 1970, teaching Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Computers for a number of years. Mr Hilliard was a Year Head, Coordinator of the Mathematics Department, ICT coordinator and scholarship coordinator at various times during his career, as well as contributing through positions such as internal examinations organisation, chess club and coordinator of detention system.

Mrs G. Mellon worked at the Diocesan School for Girls 1971-74 when the school amalgamated with The High School. She has taught Physical Education and games since then and will be remembered for her huge contribution to hockey, tennis and cricket. She held the formal positions of administrator of girls games and coordinator of pupil absence monitoring.

We are going to miss you all so much!! Thank you for everything you have done. We hope that you have long and happy retirements!

Nurse retires

We are also going to miss our faithful, indefatigable and cheerful Nurse, Mrs D. Pfeiffer, who retires in June, having served at The High School since 1995. Have a lovely retirement and thank you for everything!!

More goodbyes

This time of year always brings other departures from the school as well. We wish all students who are leaving us the best in their future lives.

Mr M. Sweetnam, Miss C. Cramp, Mr M. Doyle and Ms E. O'Connor have completed their contracts at the school and we wish them the best in their search for new teaching positions. Ms S. Quinn has applied to take a career break and we wish her well during that period.

Good luck!

The very best of luck in the Junior and Leaving Certificate examinations to all candidates. To everyone else, good luck in your exams and have a lovely summer!

Initiative awards

These are awarded at the Prize Distribution and are open to pupils of Forms 3 to 6. They are awarded to between 0 and 3 students who have shown initiative, organisational ability or administrative ability in starting or promoting a school activity.

To be eligible for a prize a student must be nominated in writing by two other students with a short statement of the reasons for the nomination. Please give nominations to Ms Saville (A10).

Open Mic Award

Congratulations to the Open Mic team (pictured above with Ms Milne), who produced a terrific magazine for the Irish Times school magazine competition. The production received one of the top awards in the senior section, with Tim Harris awarded best design and the whole team receiving a certificate as one of the five best magazines. The photograph was taken at the Sugar Club in Leeson Street where the award ceremony took place recently.

Sports day

There was an atmosphere of great fun and of some serious competition last Wednesday afternoon at Sports Day and the Athletics Championships. One of the fun events was the staff pupil tug of war which provided the usual hilarity with competitors sprawling all over the place in a desperate attempt to keep their footing against the opposition.

Congratulations everybody who took part and especially to the following cup winners - Megan Earls, Stuart Gray, Joan Somers-Donnelly, Shay Arias-Paz, Ciara Butler, Brendan Phelan, Candice Horton, Adam Synnott. Some of the cup competitions are not completed yet so some names are missing from this list.

Looking for a host family

A female student coming to The High School next September from Munich for the Christmas term is looking for a host family, as a "paying guest", or as a student exchange. Telephone number available from the office.
