School council

Congratulations to the members of the school council pictured above on their election. Absent from the photograph were Darragh Fitzpatrick, Ruth Roseingrave, Sam Fitzpatrick, Gus Nwosu, Ayo Daly, Cein Sookram, Stephanie Coughlin.

The council is elected by the pupils of the school and one of its purposes is to liaise with the school management about issues which are of concern to pupils in the daily and annual operation of the school. Previous councils have contributed to important new initiatives within the school.

A meeting will take place shortly and among the agenda items will be the following: provision of a bag rack beside the 1st year lockers on the C floor, soccer, uniform, water fountains, healthy food, shortage of food at senior lunch, Duff Gardens concert, moving the school council comments box to the library.

The regulations under which the school council operates include a stipulation that when an explanation has been given on an issue, that same issue may not be raised again for two years.

Launch of history of the school and Trust

Pictured below are Frank Sowman, Chairman of the Board of Governors; Ronnie Wallace, author of "Faithful to our Trust" and Professor Alan Ford of Nottingham University (a former pupil) at the launch of the book, which is available from Alan Phelan, archivist, at the school.

Form 5 play

"Some Like it Hot" opens on Thursday 25 November at 8.00 p.m. and continues on Friday 26 and Saturday 27. Tickets are on sale at lunch breaks €8 for adults and €5 students/concession.

Poppy appeal

The organisers of the appeal have sent their thanks to you for your contribution of €238.47 this year. The appeal nationally covers less than half of what it costs to assist the people who are covered by the charity and a subsidy from Britain is added.

Science week

On 9 November, as part of science week, Ms Thorp and Ms Delaney brought 1T to DIT for a Physics demonstration where we learned how to balance cutlery on a matchstick, how to suspend a beahc ball in mid air and all about everyday physics. As we were waiting for the other schools to arrive, we had a tour of the main laboratories. Thank you to Ms Thorp for organising the visit, which we all really enjoyed.

Competition

New can recycling bins will be appearing around the school shortly. Greenschools are running a fabulous competition to find a design and logo for these. Entries should be given to Mr Irwin, C5, before the end of the week. Fantastic prizes!
