Young Scientist
Our week of exhibiting for the BT Young
Scientist Competition began on Tuesday when we set up our stand in the
RDS. After an enjoyable opening ceremony on Wednesday the judging began.
Having prepared what we were going to say, we waited anxiously for our
judge. We explained to him the basis of our project before answering any
of his questions. At the end he took our project report and we left for
home, feeling that everything had gone to plan. We returned early the
next morning, anxious to see our judge’s comments and to prepare for the
first public day. After answering a few of the public’s questions, and
frightening a few visitors into thinking that their houses would burn
down, our second judge arrived. Again we encountered no problems. The
third round of judging didn’t go quite as smoothly, as the judge
constantly kept us on our toes with complex questions. However we still
managed to answer them all. During the exhibition, we also managed to
see other projects, and talk with other exhibitors. Competing in the BT
Young Scientist was a brilliant experience. Sincere thanks to Dr.
Whitford, Mr. Kelly, the office staff, Mr. Duffy, Ms. Fahey and Ms.
Toolan for their help.
The title of our project was "An Investigation into the causes of house
fires due to the buildup of static electricity in laundry". We tested
tumble driers to see how much static is built up and we also tested
clothes coming out of a plastic basket for static. We proved that the
electricity was sufficient to cause a fire in certain circumstances.
