All Ireland Quiz Victory

Congratulations to our quiz team who won the Irish Examiner All Ireland Quiz Championship last week at RTE. This is the first year that the school has entered a team in this competition and there was stiff opposition with a total of 207 teams. The final will be aired on RTE Radio at 6.05 p.m. on Saturday June 2. The team would like to thank the staff and students who came to support them. Congratulations also to Mr A. Kelly and Mr T. Gill who were the members of staff supervising the team.

Salters' Festival of Chemistry

Congratulations to our team which took part in an all day competition in the School of Chemistry at Trinity College last Saturday. They faced two separate challenges involving forensic chemistry and the chemistry of colour - gaining an impressive third prize despite the strong opposition. Well done to the team, who showed enthusiasm and initiative, and to Dr C. Whitford, the teacher in charge of the group.

General Election results

Form 2 conducted a mock general election in May 18th and the voters were asked to vote, using proportional respresentation, for the leaders of the political parties represented in the outgoing Dail.
In the first round votes, Trevor Sargent of the Green Party won the highest percentage with 22.66 (purely coincidental that he is a past pupil!), followed by Gerry Adams (20), Bertie Ahern (19.73), Enda Kenny (17.06), Pat Rabbitte (16.8), Michael McDowell (2.4) and Joe Higgins (1.33) - so it looks like a Green/Sinn Fein coalition will take office after the General Election if these results are replicated around the country.
The students who voted were also asked which of the likely coalitions they would favour and 33.86% favoured Fine Gael and Labour, while 22.13% favoured Fianna Fail and the Progressive Democrats. The poll was taken before the big Bertie swing this weekend!!

Ski trip

Monday was the closing date for deposits for the ski trip. A small number of places has been left open. If you would like to secure one of these places your deposit needs to be paid tomorrow morning, Wednesday 22 May.

Rock climbing

The final rock climbing session of the year will take place on Friday from 4.00 p.m. to 7.00 p.m. in Dalkey Quarry.
Please sign up early in the week on the noticeboard in the Technical building.
