Andrew McKay memorial hockey tournament
Mr Eoghan Doherty and Dr Ian Fraser receive the funds raised from the tournament and from the charity swim at Christmas for St Luke's Hospital (over 1200 Euro) This internal tournament is held each year in memory of Mr Andrew McKay, a young teacher and hockey coach at The High School who died of cancer in 2002. It was a beautiful sunny day and promised to be a good tournament with an impressive turn-out, especially among the junior years. The four coaches battled to organise everyone into four groups and then into teams of 6 or 7 within those groups. In total there were roughly twenty teams of mixed years and ability. Some teams looked very impressive with talented players on each team. Each team played four matches in their respective groups and it was soon down to four teams, the best of each group. At this stage there were a few injuries and a good few dodgy player substitutions. The semi finals and then final and 3rd place play-off were soon over to leave the deserving winning team. (They know who they are). But well done to all the teams who made it a fully enjoyable tournament and well done for raising almost €450 for cancer support. But most of all thank you and well done to Mr Fitzpatrick, Mr Wilkinson, Ms Levis and most importantly Mrs. Mellon because the tournament would not have happened without them. Interview evening
The annual interview evening organised by the Guidance Counsellor, Ms Jones, and the Parents' Association took place recently. Students had to choose from a range of various college courses and career positions. Each student was interviewed by between one and three interviewers from their chosen college course/job. Students were marked on appearance, the presentation of their documents (i.e. cover letter, C.V. and application letter) and their ability to communicate. The interviewers were very pleasant and were very understanding to those who were nervous. Students were asked questions based on their c.v. and their chosen career path. Many thanks to all past pupils, parents and friends for all their help given in holding the mock interviews. Thanks to the teachers for arranging the rooms and special thanks to the Parents' Association Committee. Uniform shopping eveningThere will be a special late night shopping evening for High School families only at the School Uniform Store, Montrose, on Thursday 18 August 2005 from 6.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m. Litter survey3F recently conducted a survey as part of their CSPE work. 74% of the 180 students questioned thought the school had a litter problem, with the pitches and the Reynolds Hall lunch area being the worst littered areas and wrappers and crisp packets being the main items of litter. 80% of students said they would use can recycling bins if they were placed outside the building. 21% of students admitted to littering and 88% of students said they would not pick up litter if they saw it. 81% of students were aware of the new paper recycling boxes in the classrooms and 71% were aware of the can recycling bins.
