Summer music concertA wonderful concert took place on Tuesday 11 May at 7.30 p.m. in the Music Centre concert room. The room was packed to capacity and the audience was delighted to hear excellent performances from the orchestra and all of the soloists. Those pictured below played "Theme from Sheherezade by Rimsky-Korsakov", Variations on a theme of Paganini by Lloyd Webber, Rondo from Clarinet Concerto by Weber, Sicilienne by Faive, Hungarian Dance by Nolck. Shakespeare's birthday celebrationsAs well as a cake, this year Shakespeare's birthday celebrations involved a Shakespeare reading competition in the library. On Friday 23 April, the date of the great man's birth and death, classes gathered in the library. Among the competitors were soloists and group performers. The audience enjoyed extracts from Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Richard III and other plays by Shakespeare. There were prizes for the winners and, most importantly, cake for all!
Joan Somers Donnelly, 1D Congratulations to the competition winners! 17 pupils from Form 1 took part and Joan Somers Donnelly of 1D came first, with James Barber of 1D second. In the group entries, Alexander Mulcahy and Conor Frizelle were first with Romeo and Juliet in costume. Hannah Leavy, Karen Lew and Katie Murtagh were second as the witches from Macbeth. Sophie Madigan, Aisling Coughlan and Ruth Bourke were awarded merit for their two scenes from Hamlet. The competition was such a success that it is planned to make it an annual event. Rumour has it that the 1st years have begun practising already! Well done to the winners of the Shakespeare quiz: Leah Quirke 1D, Aoife McGovern 1OH, Sam Kavanagh 1OH, Tom Burke 1H, Anita Murphy 2S, Katie McCann and Beth Kelly 3HE; Rory Forsythe, Alice Mooney, Craig Rankin, Ian Thom and Al Grogan (5th Year). Double newsletter this week!There are so many good things happening in the school at the moment that we have had to produce a double edition of the newsletter. Keep it up!! Karate black beltsCongratulations to our three pupils who have achieved black belt level in Karate. Out of 10 black belts at national level, these three were from High School!
KickboxingCongratulations to Kim Weekes (Form 4) who became novice champion at the All Ireland kickboxing eliminations held in DCU recently. This is a major achievement for Kim as she only started the sport a year and a half ago. SwimmingAt the Leinster age group competitions held at Abbotstown, Ian Thom, competing in the Under 18 events, won bronze medals in the 100m backstroke and 100m freestyle, making him the fastest 16 year old of the weekend! Well done. There is no delivery charge for orders over €100 and for only €1 a clear plastic cover can be machine fitted to any book, with the pupil's name added for a further 20c. Graduation ceremonyAll parents of Form 6 pupils and members of staff are invited to the graduation ceremony on Wednesday 26 May, which will begin at 7.30 p.m. sharp, followed by reception.
