One charger to bind them all?The following article appeared in The Irish Times 11 January 2005 Gizmos and gadgets are everywhere in today’s hectic world - and with them goes the worry of battery life. The mobile phone, laptop, personal digital assistant, cordless mouse, toothbrush and shaver all provide freedom of movement at the price of nearly constant recharging. Thanks to a new device which Jeff Warren intends to unveil at this year’s Esat BT Young Scientist competition, the endless variations ofrechargers cluttering the home and office may soon be a thing of the past. "I’d entered before and seen the kind of things that made a good entry," says Warren. "I decided I wanted to do something electronic so I thought of a way to eliminate having a lot of different adapters and have one universal way of powering them all." The 18-year-old sixth year student at The High School in Dublin calls his project Practical Induction. The simplicity of the device’s design - roughly the size of a thick mouse pad - versus the pragmatism of his device isn’t beyond him. "I’m just wondering why nobody has thought to anything like this before," he says. The device uses electromagnetic induction - the transfer of electricity into magnetism and back into electricity through two current-carrying inductors - to charge virtually any device. It is made from soft iron alloy and wound copper coils. "You have a pad which acts as a transformer and your phone or laptop and personal digital assistant, acts as the other side of the transformer," he says. While the pad is currently only used for mobile phones and cordless mice, Jeff Warren, a three-time entrant in the Young Scientist awards, hopes he’ll soon be able to find the right balance of efficiency and magnetic draw for use with cordless (and almost cordless) devices. - Will Sullivan Jeff was up against very stiff competition in his section and received a display award for his project. Congratulations also to Brett Lawless whose project attracted considerable attention. His project was about artificial intelligence. Three different computer programs which worked together could turn your speech into text, separate your image from the rest of a photograph and learn to recognise you. The third program was called 3D world and took the information, applied pattern analysis techniques to it and processed it.
OlympiadCongratulations to Caitriona Ryan who has been selected to compete in the next round of the Irish Science Olympiad at DCU. This round is to select a team to represent Ireland in the forthcoming EU Science Olympiad later in the year. ScizmicThe Science Club recommences on Mondays and Tuesdays from 17 January, 4.00 p.m. to 4.45 p.m. Anyone who enjoys spectacular or unusual practical work is welcome to attend. See Dr Whitford for details. 5th year study techniques seminarThe seminar takes place this Saturday, starting promptly at 9.30. Pupils are asked to please be on time. Library "Feed the Pig" collectionWell done to the people who gave money to the Cottage Home for Children. We raised €206.10 with the help of Mrs King. We would like also to thank Stephanie Moore and Kit Connolly for their help. Sarah-Kate McConnell and Nicole Campbell Under 16 rugby league finalThe Under 16s played their league final match against Kilkenny at the end of last term. On a terrible day we conceded an early penalty but Tom Meredith scored two tries and Alan O'Keefe converted one of them before half time. However, in the second half Kilkenny got two tries, their second with only a few minutes to go, to win 15-12. On behalf of the team I would like to thank the extra lads who joined the squad, all the supporters and our coaches, Mr Giles and Alan Hilliard. Corridor safetyPlease remember that when the corridors and stairwells are busy, you are asked to pass on the right, in order to help with the flow of people and for your own safety. Rock pop show
