4HE in Cork Film Festival

Last year, 4HE made a short film on human rights in association with Amnesty International. The film tells the story of a young man from Burundi who left his country to seek asylum in Ireland. We would like to congratulate all the students involved. The film was shown in Cork last Thursday (Gate Cinema) as part of the 51st Cork Film Festival to an international audience. Well done!

Prize Day - you are welcome!

Prize Day and Parents' Evening will take place this year on Wednesday 25 October at 8.00 p.m. (please be seated by 7.50 p.m.).
The parents of prize winners will receive a written invitation but other parents and pupils are also welcome to attend. If you would like to come, please telephone the office by 23 October so that we know how many to expect. Supper is served afterwards. Pupils attending must wear full winter uniform, including school jumper.

Change to winter uniform

Winter uniform must be worn from Monday 23 October 2006 until a date to be announced in April. Formal white shirts with the school tie worn neatly up near the collar, shirts tucked in and school jumpers are worn during the winter months. Please make sure you have the necessary items by next week. Ties may be purchased from the School Uniform Store (Montrose) or from the school office.

Fireworks

We have recently been notified of the new penalties of the Criminal Justice Act 2006 concerning fireworks. Possession of unlicensed fireworks now carries a fine of up to €10,000, igniting an unlicensed firework anywhere or throwing an ignited firework at a person or property, or possession of unlicensed fireworks with intent to sell or supply up to €10,000 fine and 5 years imprisonment. As the notification says - you could lose more than your fingers!

National Poetry Day

Once again, poetry day was a great success. Displays were admired, competitions entered and, all in all, everyone had a good day. Many poems were read aloud and a lot of English classes came up to the library to be part of the celebrations. Thanks very much to the Library Committee for organising the displays and decorations. Thanks also to Mrs King for causing this day to be celebrated in style.

1st years - your library needs you!

The library is on the B floor and is a lovely quiet area. It is not just books - there are many activities going on. There are riddles, quizzes, competitions and displays. There are about 11,000 books in the library - something for everyone.
It is open on Monday and Friday for junior lunch and Tuesday and Thursday for senior lunch. Come and get involved. It is not just a bunch of books!

An Inconvenient Truth

Last Monday, 3C and 3WK science classes went on a trip to see the film documentary "An Inconvenient Truth". This was based on Al Gore's global warming presentation and offered many new and shocking facts on the subject (scary stuff!). To learn more about global warming you can see the film or visit its website www.climatecrisis.net It was an enjoyable experience and on behalf of 3C and 3 WK we would like to thanks Ms Watson and Ms Toolan.
