Congratulations Filmmakers of the Year!

Yes. After coming second place last year with “A Date With Destruction” and winning an audience award for “Planehouse”, on Thursday the 8th of March R. E. Productions won first place and were awarded the title of “Young Irish Filmmakers of the Year 2007” in the Fresh Film Festival. First prize was a place in the Young Irish Film Makers course over the summer and a very, very, very big (huge) novelty cheque for €1000. We nevertheless faced stiff competition (170 entries) and the standard of films showcased this year had improved exponentially from last year.
R. E. Productions is the brainchild of Conor Barry, Fionn Fitzmaurice, Ciaran Maginn and James McDonnell.
The film entered was titled “Hang Up Noise Man” and tells the story of a man who struggles to overcome the odds and achieve greatness regardless of his communication problems. It’s sort of like an Irish “Babel”, and by “Babel”, we mean film. It is an action packed explosion fest of creativity and genius of the highest calibre and it was for this reason that it was crowned first place in a competition of over 170 films by young filmmakers.
With witty dialogue and puns galore it is difficult not to fall in love with the colourful characters depicted by the fine range of actors. Other than the previously named filmmakers, Lauren Turner also makes a heart warming cameo and shows our beloved hero the way to true happiness and Katibeth Rendek’s acting had us all convinced. We used a camera.
R. E. Productions continues to push the boundaries of the medium of film and their filmmaking expertise can only go up from here. With a huge catalogue of films already and plenty more in the barrel, R. E. Productions really have stood the test of time.

Congratulations to Alex Deane (Form 2) who achieved his Junior Black Belt in Kenpo Karate last month after a series of stringent tests in front of the Senior Grand Master Paul Mills, in Las Vegas. Along with three other members of his club, Alex became one of the first people in Ireland to achieve this rank. This was an incredible occasion for Alex, with two ten hour flights and two drives of 500km across the Mojave desert involved, as well as all the sights of Las Vegas. Well done!

Outstanding music success

Congratulations to Robert Farhat (Form 6) who is continuing his accomplished musical career with some outstanding recent achievements. Robert won the Frank Maher Music Prize at the open competition at Castleknock College, winning a bursary of €2,000. He also recently won the Benson Cup for Bach piano playing at the Feis Ceoil, along with the Morrie Grant Cup and Bursary. Well done!
