Simon Community fun run

A big thank you to all the pupils who participated in the fun run on Saturday. Even though a Saturday morning did not suit a lot of people who had other commitments we still had a team of 49 pupils and staff. Pupils are asked to collect their sponsorship money and to return the money and card to Mr McClure in A4 before half term.

Winter uniform

Winter uniform must be worn from Monday 22 October 2007 until a date to be announced in April. Formal white shirts with the school tie worn neatly up near the collar, shirts tucked in and school jumpers are worn during the winter months. Please make sure you have the necessary items by next week. Ties may be purchased from the School Uniform Store (Montrose) or from the school office.

Prize Day & Parents' Evening

Prize Day and Parents' Evening will take place this year on Wednesday 24 October at 8.00 p.m. (please be seated by 7.50 p.m.). This year, the guest speaker will be Dr Peter Wyse Jackson, director of the National Botanic Gardens. There will also be performances by a choir and by the orchestra.

The parents of prize winners will receive a written invitation but other parents and pupils are also welcome to attend. If you would like to come, please telephone the office by 22 October so that we know how many to expect. Supper is served afterwards. Pupils attending must wear full winter uniform, including school jumper.

4th year careers seminar

Last Friday about 30 of us made our way to St. Vincent’s Hospital for a day of lectures on careers in the medical profession as well as a tour of the hospital. Many of us were interested in either nursing or medicine although we were also given talks on Radiology, Research, Social Work, Occupational Therapy as well as Physiotherapy. All the speakers were really positive and expressed a unanimous love of their respective jobs. They did stress however that commitment and hard work were essential to succeed in the medical profession. The doctor highlighted this saying that he was called into the hospital at 1.45 am on Tuesday and didn’t arrive home until 6.00am on Wednesday. The hospital has state of the art facilities and we saw the new biochemistry labs and modern mental health wing - it was impressive. After the tour it was clear than many of us had been assured that a career in some form of medicine would be a good option. A word of thanks must go to Ms. T. Jones for her organisation of the trip as well as the helpful and informative staff and speakers of St. Vincent’s Hospital.
