On a bright St.Patrick’s morning 44 students arrived
at Dublin Airport ready to board an Are Lingus jet to Budapest. The next
morning it was off on a guided tour of both Pest and Buda. Sights
visited included the ‘Heroes Square and the Statue of the Anonymous;
St.Stephen’s Cathedral; Buda Castle; the Marzipan museum; and
Fisherman’s Bastion. In the afternoon we visited the Fashion Street area
of Pest and saw the street markets.
The following morning we did some shopping in
Budapest before going to the Szechenyi’s Baths – Geothermal spa and
swimming baths which are 38C and have to be cooled down from 60C. That
evening we boarded the overnight train from Budapest to Prague, passing
through Slovakia.
Our early morning arrival in Prague was met with
subzero temperatures and snow covering the ground. Off to the hotel for
breakfast and on a sight seeing tour of Prague Castle or the Hradcany
This is where the Czech president resides and is very impressive with
its St Vitus Cathedral and the Royal Palace with its Vladislav Hall. In
the afternoon we had a very pleasant cruise on the Vltava River with a
buffet lunch on board. We saw the famous Charles Bridge (no one eating
Cadbury’s flake).
The next day we drove the 100km. north to Terezin (or
Theresienstadt) where the Nazis had their ‘Model’ Ghetto and
Concentration Camp. The Red Cross visited here but by the time they
arrived back in Geneva most inmates had been shipped off to Auschwitz.
Back to Prague and lunch. We walked down Wencelas square and saw the
Astronomical Clock in the Old Town. That evening we went to a Czech folk
dinner where we were entertained to Czech folk music and dancing. Cian
Twomey, Aoife Ryan and Steven Chapman had a go at dancing.
On the last day we went to see Lidice – the town
razed to the ground by the Nazis as a reprisal for the assassination of
Reinhard Heydrich. A moving occasion!! Last minute shopping in Prague
and off to the airport. Much fun was had on the trip and we would like
to thank Mr.Wright; Mr.Flynn; Ms.Lynch and Ms.McKevitt for this.
