4 HE Remember the Holocaust
by Mrs
Hutchinson Edgar and Gary Beardsley(4HE)
Last week members of 4HE planted crocus bulbs to remember the victims of
the Holocaust. The Crocus Project is run by the Holocaust education
trust of Ireland. The Trust provides participating schools with bulbs to
plant in autumn in memory of the one and half million Jewish children
and thousands of other children who died in the Holocaust. The yellow
flowers recall the Stars of David all Jews were forced to wear under
Nazi rule. In Ireland the crocus blooms at the end of January around the
time of international Holocaust Memorial Day (27 January). During the
planting of the bulbs Emma Hogg read a piece from the crocus project
called ‘Sadness and Hope’ while Aisling Reina read from the summary of
the ‘Declaration of the Stockholm International Forum on the Holocaust’
which was issued on the 55th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz
and endorsed by 44 countries including Ireland. It contains an
aspiration for a “democratic and tolerant society free of the evils of
prejudice and other forms of bigotry.” We planted the bulbs because we
wanted to pay our respects to the victims of the Holocaust.
Mark Keleghan of 4HE wrote the following piece ‘Crocuses’ of Hope as
reflection on this project.
"His name was Isaac.70 years ago he was just another student He lived on
the outskirts of Paris. He was as different as any other teenager. He
liked to play music and hang out with his friends’.He liked to listen to
Ragtime music on his parent’s record player but they didn’t.
He wasn't too fond of school, but he did like History and Art. Most of
his spare time was devoted to sketching people, especially Rachel.
Two years later Isaac and some of his friends were rounded up and
transported to a concentration camp by the German occupiers of France.
They committed no crime, but because of their faith they were considered
enemies of the state..........Rachel never got to see the sketches.
Last week as part of our History class we planted crocuses to
commemorate the deaths of Isaac and the millions of other children who
died in the Holocaust. It is hoped that these crocuses will bloom in
January to signify World Holocaust Memorial Day. Maybe somebody will
sketch them.

On behalf of the Library Committee, I
would like to thank everyone who bought pins, ribbons, phone charms and
keyrings. We also had some generous donations which were greatly
appreciated. I am delighted to tell you that we raised €590. Finally,
thank you to all who volunteered to sell the pins and for giving up your
lunch break.
