Herb Dade

We regret to record the death of Herb Dade on March 7th. Herb worked at The High School for a number of years as a part time teacher of modern dance in Transition Year. His expertise and his pleasant, humorous personality meant that he was very popular and well liked with his students. Although he had been ill for some time, Herb was teaching his classes until about five weeks ago.
Originally from New York, Herb made his name as a jazz singer and choreographer. When he moved to Dublin he quickly became a popular figure and regular performer on the Dublin jazz scene, where he is warmly remembered. Some of his music can be heard on www.herbdade.com

1st Year A Leinster league final

It took a lot of work to reach the final last Thursday and everyone was really nervous beforehand but we knew we'd get great support, as we did for the semi-finals against Alexandra which we won 2-1. The final was a great game with a lot of good passes and brilliant tackles. Both teams had many chances on goal but never got to the back of the net. First, the game went to extra time of seven minutes a side and that still left us at nil all. The penalty flick contest which came after that resulted in Mount Anville winning by 2 to 1, our goal being scored by Stefanie Wynne. Eve Roseingrave (goalkeeper) made some brilliant saves in both the game and the penalty flicks. We would like to thank Mr Fitzpatrick for coaching us and getting us this far.

JCT rugby semi-final draw

The High School Junior Cup team managed to secure a draw in the semi final of the Father Godfrey Cup last Wednesday in Seapoint. With a ferocious wind and constant rain in their faces in the first half, High School limited King’s Hospital to a penalty and an unconverted try. Turning around, High School immediately sought to dominate the opposition and were rewarded with a try by captain Ciaran Collins to make it 10-5. High School now laid siege to the King’s Hospital line but unforced errors cost the team the try they deserved. With time running out, Iain Lane crossed the line in the corner with the last move of the game. Collins came agonisingly close to winning it with the conversion but the kick sailed just right of the posts. The replay will now take place on Wednesday for a place in the final against CUS. Well done to the players and to coach Mr P. McCaughey!

Visit of Siobhan Parkinson

On Monday, March 6, Irish award winning children’s author, Siobhan Parkinson came to talk some second year classes in a belated celebration of World Book Day. Her book, Sisters no way, won the Bisto Book award and is included in the Irish Independent series of 20 great children’s books.
She told us how she began writing for children and progressed to writing for older children and even adults. She also gave us an insight into the world of publishing and writing. Her advice to us, she said goes completely against what our English Teachers tell us. She never plans her work but just begins with an idea and sees where it takes her.
Our thanks to our librarian, Mrs. King and our English teachers for organising a very interesting and fun English class!
