Prefects

Congratulations to the above who have been elected Prefects for the year 2005-2006:

The system of election for prefects is that they are voted into office by their own year group and the staff, subject to the approval of the Principal. The Principal invites those who have reached the qualifying level of votes to consider the responsibilities and duties attached to being a prefect and confirms appointments in August.

The prefects are responsible for many duties which assist the smooth running of the school and all pupils are expected to cooperate with requests made by prefects. Prefects are also there to help other pupils, especially those new to the school or those who may be experiencing difficulties of one sort or another, so don't hesitate to ask for their help.

Library

To those of you new to the school, the library is well worth visiting. We have over 10,000 books, an excellent study area, computer facilities, newspapers and regular exhibitions on topical subjects. The librarian is always delighted to assist with academic and literary queries.

For those who are particularly keen, we run a "Friends of the Library committee" which, among other things, picks ‘books of the month’ and holds occasional events. At present we have displays:

The Year of Science

International Literacy Day- 8th September

I would encourage all of you to come and browse the shelves. One never fails to find an interesting book and our collection is constantly being updated. You’ll find the latest fiction and non fiction as well as the latest reference works.

The library is an excellent resource and a great portal of discovery. Do come and have a look.

Junior Cert results party

The school, and all of the pupils attending the party, would like to thank the Parents' Association Committee (Dr Ian Mackay in particular) and the parents who have volunteered to organise the results night party on Wednesday. Good luck to the candidates with their results!!

Initiative awards

These are awarded at the Prize Distribution and are open to pupils of Forms 3 to 6. They are awarded to between 0 and 3 students who have shown initiative, organisational ability or administrative ability in starting or promoting a school activity.

To be eligible for a prize a student must be nominated in writing by two other students with a short statement of the reasons for the nomination. Please give nominations to Ms Saville (A10).

Music awards

Congratulations to all those students who did so well in the Associated board music exams!

First year student in All Ireland semi-final

First year student Maoliosa Nugent was chosen to participate at national level in Croke Park on the occasion of the All-Ireland Football Semi-Final on September 4th. Maoliosa was chosen for her excellent football skills in the INTO / GAA mini sevens Leinster regional festival. Maoliosa and other national finalists played an exhibition match at half time. Well done!

Thanks to Otto Black, Form 1, for the cartoon above. If we publish a cartoon by you, you may claim a €7 prize from the office - in Otto's case he has donated it to charity. Some other very good cartoons have been received and will be published in future editions. Keep them coming! (The above cartoon is copyright)
