Junior art awards
Every year, three of the Junior
Certificate art projects of particular merit are selected to be added to
the school art collection. Each of the artists wins a prize which was
presented in assembly recently. Today we feature the three winning
paintings by Stéphan Hanly (top), Joann O'Meara (middle) and Helen

Simon Community food
collection
There are hundreds of people homeless and
sleeping rough in Dublin, and these will be spending their Christmas on
the streets. Every year there is a food collection organised by the
school to bring food to the Dublin Simon Community shelters. Please
bring in non-perishable food like tins, soup, tea, coffee, biscuits etc
to A4 so that these people can have a good meal this Christmas.

Cake sale for the
homeless
3G held a very successful cake sale on
Friday. We raised €400 which will be donated to the Dublin Simon
Community. We would like to make a special thanks to Mr McClure and Mr
Irwin for organising it. Thanks to all the pupils in the class who
worked so hard and also to parents, teachers and Matron who kindly baked
the cakes. Thanks to all who helped out on the day, particularly Mr
McCaughey. Thanks to everyone who contributed their money! |

Julie Le Brocquy
visits HSD
On Friday 9 December, 4HE and Ms. Missen
spent the day with Julie Le Brocquy. Julie was a winner of a golden
globe for the film ‘Osama’ in 2004, and helped us to plan a short film
for Voice Our Concern, an Amnesty International project aimed at
exploring Human Rights issues with transition year students. 10 schools
are participating and are being visited by some of Irelands most
talented fllmmakers. The films will be shown in May in the Irish Film
Institute. Photo left.

Welcoming Aubrey
Flegg
Aubrey Flegg came to give a talk to the
first years about his award-winning book, "The Cinnamon Tree", on
Tuesday 6 December. He used a de-activated landmine, some African money
and Powerpoint slides.
His interesting and powerful talk included the reasons for writing the
book and the danger and seriousness of landmines. He explained that he
was originally a geologist but when he saw the buzz and life of Africa
he kndew this would be the ideal place to set a book. There were plenty
of interesting questions from students for him to answer. The talk was
fantastic and really highlighted landmine awareness. He even signed a
few autographs!
