Habitat fundraising update

To date we have raised €12,457 of the €30,000 needed to fully fund a team of students and staff to build houses for disadvantaged families in Romania. There has been a massive effort by both staff and students participating in the trip, as well as the wider school community. Fundraising projects include a football tournament, the Dublin minithon, a Halloween party, a cake sale, a table quiz and, of course, donations towards the Habitat house display. Thank you to the following individuals and companies who have sponsored us so far:
Manor House Homebuilders, An Post, Medcon, O'Brien and Richardson, 1R, 6LM, Ms Gilpin.
All of your effort and generosity are hugely appreciated.

Visiting the nurse?

In future, students wishing to visit the Nurse are to obtain a slip from their teacher releasing them from class. If your need arises at break, lunch or between classes, please visit the next teacher you have in class and obtain a slip. Obviously, if an emergency arises go directly to the Nurse.

Concern Fast

Would all pupils please hand in their sponsorship money to Mrs Boyce and Mr Griffin by Thursday 14 December at the latest. Thank you!

Sailing champions!

Right: Former pupils, Claudine Murphy and Katie Hamilton at the recent TCD Sports Scholarship Awards ceremony at which Claudine was awarded a Sports Scholarship in Sailing.

Both Claudine and Katie received commemorative plaques as members of the successful DU Sailing Club team, which represented Ireland at the 26th Student Yachting World Cup in Lorient this year. They earned their place at this competition earlier in 2006, by being the 1st ranked Irish College in the intervarsity team racing circuit. The team won the prestigious Yachting World Cup for Ireland for the first time, in a closely fought contest by defeating 12 teams from 10 Countries from Europe, Japan and the USA.

Art winners

Congratulations to Coilin O'Connell, Jack O'Kennedy and Sam Kavanagh (Form 4) on their selection to provide paintings for the school art collection. These are currently being framed and will then be displayed, along with the senior winners from last year - see below.

French table quiz

The pupils photographed right were recently chosen by Miss Stevenson to represent the school in the annual French table quiz held in Firhouse Community College.
To prepare, we looked over previously asked questions but it wasn't exactly intense training because we have been told the quiz was more of a fun night than a competition. Ms Stevenson kindly accompanied us and when we arrived we were assigned a table number and mingled with pupils from twenty five other schools.
Ten rounds of six questions, plus a picture bonus round, lasted two hours with a short break in between. Each question was called out twice, in French, and were given a minute to confer. The questions varied from "name an impressionist artist whose name begins with M" to "of what country is Dakar the capital".
Unfortunately, we didn't win a top prize (averaging four correct answers a round) but a consolation prize of a French novel for each team member was a lovely gesture.
The night was a huge success, irrespective of the scoreboard, and we would like to thank Miss Stevenson for the opportunity. I would strongly encourage next year's sixth years to take part, as learning has never been so much fun.

4L go ice-skating!

Mr McClure's English class has a very enjoyable afternoon last Wednesday at the RDS ice rink. We have some great skaters in the class with Ross Finn and Catriona Grimes being particularly impressive.

Feed the Pig

Once again this year, in aid of Barnardos, the library committee has begun its "Feed the Pig" campaign. Barnardos aims to help under-privileged children. So, if you can, all you need to do is to drop in any spare change to our piggy bank and Mrs King will kindly double all donations. Thanks!
Jessica Patterson for the library committee
