Do you Bebo?
As most students probably already know
Bebo.com, and other similar sites, are websites established by companies
to encourage teenagers to communicate with their friends through them.
They provide web space for photographs and members can invite their
friends to link to their page where chat messages can be posted. The
Bebo site is categorised by school without the permission of schools,
"for convenience", according to the owners. The purpose of the site,
from the point of view of the company, is to make profit from
advertising which is targeted at the teenage audience.
WARNING - if you post your photograph and your name associated
with your school and you also leave your page open to all to access (or
you allow strangers to link to your page), then someone wishing to
locate you or to target you in some way knows who you are and where you
are and what you look like.
HURTING OTHER PEOPLE? The originators of the site intend it to be
a friendly exercise to increase communication and most people use it in
that way. However, a small number of people in many schools in Ireland
are using this site to hurt other people deliberately, by posting
malicious gossip and accusations or by creating false pages or by
excluding individuals from their list of "friends" and then pointing
this out. Are you one of these people? If so, you are participating in
organised bullying. How does that make you feel about yourself and the
kind of person you are? A person who chooses a sneaky, supposedly
anonymous way to attack and hurt others - similar to telling lies or
calling names and then running away to hide? Please rethink what you are
doing! If you use Bebo, use it as it was intended to be - to promote
friendships.
