"Faithful To Our Trust"

On 17 November 2004, a major new history of the Erasmus Smith Trust and The High School will be published, having been written by W.J.R. Wallace, a former teacher at the school. The trust was founded in the 17th century and used to own five secondary schools and over 150 primary schools!

The book is a scholarly, detailed and well illustrated work which is entertaining to read, revealing of some amazingly controversial periods in the history of the Trust and school and of interest to many people.

Pre-publication orders of this 290 page hardback publication by Columba Press are available from Alan Phelan, Archivist, at the school address at a special price of €25 (rrp €30). If you would like to order copies, please enclose cheque or credit card details, no cash by post. tel: 01-4922611, e-mail archives@highschooldublin.com, fax 01-4924427.

Winter uniform

School jumpers must be worn from Monday next 18 October 2004 until a date to be announced in the late spring. You are reminded that only formal shirts may now be worn - no polos. Only white t-shirts may be worn under the school shirt.

Healthy corner

Did you know that the American habit of supersizing portions has now caught on here? Over half of all Irish adults are now overweight and overweight teenagers are more likely to be overweight adults, so start sensible eating habits now! Find out what your weight for your height and frame type should be and then aim for that - not too low, not too high.

A baguette with cheese, rashers, lettuce and coleslaw equals 1230 calories, while the same ingredients in a brown bread sandwich are half of that!! Size down!!

Simon Community fun run

Congratulations to all those who were involved in the fun run on Sunday. Your generosity in giving up your afternoon was much appreciated. Sponsorship cards and money should be returned to Mr McClure in A4 before half term.

Be safe!

Please be aware of the need for road safety as the days gradually darken. Wear a reflective armband or harness over your uniform coat, cycle carefully and observe the stop sign at the end of Zion Road. Wear cycle helmets. Cross roads carefully. Stay alive and in one piece!!

Hospice fundraiser

Recently, we sold hot chocolate and biscuits at junior break (coffee at senior break) in aid of Our Lady's Hospice Harold's Cross coffee morning. It took a lot of hard work but it was extremely worthwhile. In total, we raised €371.50. I would like to thank everyone for their support, especially Miss Graham and the catering staff.

Animal welfare week

This picture was taken following an assembly on Peata - the Irish organisation for pets and people.

"Bobby" visits residents of a nursing home every week to bring fun and companionship to the residents.

Could you bring a little warmth to lonely people with your pet?
