Science success

As the Director of the Science Olympiads, Dublin City University I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the High School, Rathgar on the success of your past pupils at the IBM/DCU Irish Science Olympiad (ISO) and the International Science Olympiads over the past number of years. DCU hosts the ISO in early December each year and manages Ireland’s participation at the International Science Olympiads in the following July/August. The top four Irish students in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Programming and Physics represent Ireland at the Internationals.

In 1994 DCU hosted the first IBM/DCU All Ireland Computer Programming Olympiad and sent a team of four students to Stockholm, Sweden to compete in the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI). The following year Eoin Curran won an All Ireland Computer Programming bronze medal and went on to represent Ireland at the IOI in Eindhoven, The Netherlands where he won an IOI bronze medal. In 1996 he repeated this feat both at the ISO in DCU and at the IOI in Veszprém, Hungary. In 1997 Eoin won the All Ireland Computer Programming gold medal and won a silver IOI medal in Capetown, South Africa. In 2001 Nicholas Nash won the All Ireland Computer Programming gold medal and represented Ireland at the IOI in Tampere, Finland.

In 1998 DCU held the first Irish Physics Olympiad and Oliver Nash won the silver medal. He was subsequently selected to represent Ireland at International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) in Reykjavik, Iceland.

In 1999 Michelle McCartney won the silver medal at the Irish Biology Olympiad and won a bronze medal at the International Biology Olympiad (IBO) in Uppsala, Sweden. In 2003 Paul Webster won the gold medal at the Irish Biology Olympiad and went on to win a bronze medal at the IBO in Minsk, Belarus.

This is one of the best records of achievement of any school at the Irish and International Science Olympiads to date.

3G breast cancer awareness fund raising

October is breast cancer awareness month and as this is an issue to which nearly everyone can relate, we, the pupils of 3G took it upon ourselves to continue the work of past pupil Jenny Kane and sell pink ribbons and pins for the month. We raised a huge total of €1,000 and we would like to thank everybody who contributed and to let them know that their donations are greatly appreciated!! We would also like to thank Miss Graham for her dedication and support.

Meeting the President of East Timor

Recently, the President of East Timor, Xanna Gusmao, came to Ireland to talk about how his country is coping after its recent independence. Class 3G have been working on a project since 1st year linking up with schools in East Timor, writing letters, etc. Two pupils were invited to go to one of the President's speeches in Kimmage. It was a great night and we even managed to get out photograph taken with the President!

Editor's note - Pupils from The High School were heavily involved in working with Tom Hyland in the campaign to free East Timor over many years.
