Prize Day
Prize Day took place recently. The guest
speaker was Dr Aengus O'Marcaigh, Consultant Paediatric Haematologist at
the National Paediatric Haematology/Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant
Centre at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin. He spoke about the
importance of medical and scientific research for the improvement of
life expectation and health of people and described some of the
interesting research in which his own team is engaged.
The Principal spoke about the need for national leadership in the
current crisis, with particular emphasis on the value of education,
research and training as methods of helping the working population,
present and future, to contribute to the new innovative Ireland which is
needed as the global economy recovers. He particularly questioned the
current government's decision to slash and burn education when it was
most needed.
Choir and orchestra performances were greatly enjoyed and everybody
adjourned for supper in the dining hall afterwards.
Thanks to everybody who helped to prepare this occasion - grounds and
caretaking staff, office staff, catering staff, teaching staff,
prefects, etc. Particular thanks to Ms Saville who organises the Prize
List and gathers the prizes with Mrs King's assistance.
National Poetry Day
On 8 October, various English classes
visited the Library to celebrate the poetry of many Irish poets. Some
famous works were read and many pupils also wrote their own poems and
entered them in the Library competition. A very colourful display of
poems was put up around the walls and lost of quizzes were available. A
huge thank you to Mrs King and the committee for an excellent job that
produced yet another fun and educational poetry day.

5th Year play
Only 1 1/2 weeks to go to this year's
play, "What I hate about the shrew", which is a teenage tale loosely
based on "The Taming of the Shrew". A shrew is a small mouse-like animal
but Shakespeare used this term to describe an unpleasant, argumentative
young woman. If you'd like to see Finn Murphy get the better of Aisling
Reina, this is the play for you! Tickets go on sale this week during
lunch breaks adults €10, students €7, for performances on Thursday,
Friday and Saturday 19-21 November.

Careers exhibition - forms 4,5,6
On Thursday 19 November 2009, 7.30p.m. to
9.00p.m. there is a Careers exhibition being held in St Killian's German
School, Clonskeagh. This exhibition has been organised by a group of
Guidance Counsellors from the local schools including The High School.
All of the Universities, Institutes of Technology, and Senior Colleges
from the Dublin area will be represented on the evening.
What makes this exhibition different from others is that there are
current students on the various courses available for questions on the
evening. Admission to the exhibition is free to the senior students
(4,5,6) of The High School. This is a very good opportunity to find out
more about courses and colleges in an efficient and time saving way. I
would encourage as many people (both parents and students) to attend as
possible.
