1st XI go out to strong St Andrew's
We couldn't believe it when we were drawn with St Andrew's in the 2nd round of the Leinster senior cup. There was no other team left in the competition that we hadn't beaten by at least two goals already this year. We didn't play as well as we could have on the day, despite the loudest and best of High School supporters on the side line (thanks for coming!). St Andrew's scored twice in the first half which gave us quite a hill to climb. In the second half we put a lot of pressure on them, finally resulting in a goal from Nikki Daly but they managed a third goal near full time. A big thanks to Ms Ritchie and Mr Fitpatrick for all their hard work this season. (Photo over page) Orla Walsh SCT robbed of resultWhen sides complain about refereeing decisions it is usually put down to "sour grapes" on defeat but, in this case, one of the most extraordinary decisions the newsletter has ever seen deprived The High School of the result of this match. Ben Cantan was clearly seen to have scored what should have been the winning try under the posts in the dying moments of this tough encounter and yet the referee failed to award it through what seems to have been bad positioning on his part. Having spent most of the second half camped in Newbridge's 22, to be deprived of their reward in this way was a huge disappointment to the team. Steven Duggan reports: Last Monday the SCT played their first round cup match against Newbridge College at Templeville Road. On a very windy day we decided to play into the wind in the first half and were reasonably happy to be only 6-0 down at half time. We used the wind to our advantage in the second half and stayed camped on the Newbridge line for long periods but unfortunately we were unable to convert pressure into points. The team would like to thank our excellent supporters, pupils, teachers and parents who attended.
East Leinster cross-country championshipsAbout 50 High School athletes (boys and girls) took part in these championships last week - all of them completed the course and there were many fine performances and personal bests. In the senior girls race, Sharon Johnson (Form 6) was our best finisher (9th) and she again qualified for the Leinster finals. This is the sixth year in a row that Sharon has qualified as a Leinster finalist. In the minor boys, Jamie Ryan (Form 1) was our best finisher (9th) and also qualified for the Leinster finals. The best achievement of the day in difficult and windy conditions was the silver medals achieved by the senior boys team over a course of 6,000 metres. The team was led home by Brendan Phelan (Form 5) in 9th place and the other team members were Mark Lew, Neil O'Connor, Evan McAuley, John McDermott and Robert Fullerton. This team now goes forward to the Leinster finals. Well done to all who took part. The Cay - junior drama
On 16 January 2S put on a production of The Cay by Theodore Taylor. After weeks spent writing the script, and not learning our lines, we got half-ready and invited all of 2nd year to the Reynolds Hall. It all started with Daniel Tuomey introducing The Cay when the CD was playing so noone could hear him. This was followed by a short hilarious skit by David Kenny and Romano Fusciardi with more musical mishaps. We continued with forgotten lines, not knowing when to come on and Siobhan Margolis hitting Jack Maddan too hard with a can. And, who can forget Nick Fitzpatrick as the brilliant barber. But, after all that, we like to think it was a complete success. We would like to thank everyone who helped us with the experience, especially Ms Missen, for all the effort she put in. Thank you also, Mr Prendergast, for taking photographs. D. Moran Past pupilsThe PPU is having a talk on the archives of the Erasmus Smith Trust on 18 February at 8.00 p.m. by the archivist, Alan Phelan. The archives date back to about 1650 and contain the records and documents of hundreds of schools which used to be owned by the Trust which now owns only The High School.
