Transition Year European Studies

Pictured are students participating in a project which involves writing personal profiles which are sent to students in other European schools. Students in corresponding European countries return their personal profiles to our students and in this way get to know different cultures, lifestyles, and the interests of their European peers. Thanks to Mr Swan who coordinates this interesting course.

President's Award Gold challenge

The Presidents award is Ireland's very own National Challenge Award, the country’s most prestigious and respected individual award programme, and a challenge from the President of Ireland to you .

Calling all those in form 5 and form 6

Are you 17 years? Will you be 17 years soon?

The Gold award is the most demanding challenge and is earned over a minimum period of eighteen months to two years. You do not have to have done the Bronze or Silver award before you do the Gold. There are at present over eighty students in form 5 and form 6 in HSD with the Bronze Award and fifty who are working on the Bronze award in form 4. There are also students, both inside and outside school, working on the Gold . Anyone can take part as long as you are self-motivated and up to the challenge

If you start now you may continue after you leave school and I will continue to be your PAL ( Presidents Award Leader). If you are interested please get information from me in B3.

Pictured in the photo is Michelle McCartney (HSD past pupil ) who received the Gold award from The President earlier this year.

For her physical challenge Michelle walked Saint James’ Way (Camino de Santiago) across the entire length of Spain from the border of France to the west coast of Spain, a total distance of 847km. Congratulations Michelle.

Healthy corner

What do you drink during the day? Cans of coke etc.? Sugar and caffeine? Why not at least change to diet coke etc? Or, even better, flavoured water drinks? Or, even more betterer, water? Your body needs about 8 glasses of water a day for you to feel healthy. What are you made of? Largely water! Not coffee, coke etc.

MYTH - so called energy drinks are good for you before, during and after sports. NOT TRUE!! Unless you are exercising for more than 2 hours at a hard pace you do not need to stuff yourself with glucose. What you need is penty of water!!!

The myths are spread by advertisers - why? To transfer your money to their pockets.
