The 5th Year Play, Oh Boy!, will commence on Thursday the 22 November, with performances on Friday 23 and Saturday 24 as well.

"Oh Boy!" is an original High School production with classic songs and dances from the 1950’s, the era that saw the emergence of Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Bill Hayley and many other rock ‘n’ roll greats.

Tickets are €10 for adults and €7 for students.

We’re looking forward to seeing everyone there for what should be an entertaining evening.

Berlin hockey trip

On Saturday 27 October, Ms Levis, Ms Jones and fifteen very tired girls met at the airport at 4am, beginning our trip to Berlin. We arrived in Berlin several hours later and after checking into our hostel, headed to the centre of Berlin for a cruise on the River Spree. After this we had a chance to go shopping before returning briefly to the hostel to prepare for ice skating that evening. Two hours and one minor injury later we returned to our hostel, completely exhausted! We woke early the next morning, slightly more refreshed and made our way to our first match of the trip. It was a very competitive game against HC Charlottenberg which ended in a 3-3 draw. In the afternoon, we went to see Checkpoint Charlie, an old crossing point from when the Berlin wall stood. That evening we were taken to the cinema which everyone really enjoyed. On Monday morning we got up early in order to beat the crowds to the Reichstag, the parliament building in Berlin which offers superb views of Berlin from the roof. We then were brought on a four hour walking tour of Berlin during which we saw many of Berlins important sights such as the Brandenburg Gate, Hitler's bunker, the Berliner Dom and of course, the best chocolate shop in the city! That evening we dined in The Hard Rock Cafe in Berlin where we celebrated Niamh's birthday- a bit early!

On Tuesday we went to the Holocaust memorial and museum in the morning, and then shopping in the afternoon in and around the KaDeWe- the biggest shopping complex in Europe. That evening we played a hockey match against HC Argo which, despite playing good hockey, we lost 3-2. We had dinner with the team and were then treated to McDonalds ice creams by the teachers. We left Berlin on Halloween morning. On behalf of everyone on the trip I would like to thank Ms Levis and Ms S. Jones for making it so enjoyable. By Amy Hughes

Diving champion

Congratulations to Olivia O Hora who won gold In the girls U12/13 Irish National Diving Championships, at the national Aquatic Center on Saturday 10 November.

Very stiff competition from the Ulster diving club meant Olivia had a mountain to climb after falling 10 points behind at the half way stage. Gradually clawing back the deficit, the gap lay at only 0.01pt with one dive to go. A magnificent 12th dive for Olivia resulted in her taking gold. Olivia’s final score of 291.9 was a personnel best topping her previous best which got her fourth place as a guest in the English nationals in July.

Basketball selection

Congratulations to Leanne McDonnell who has been selected on the Dublin Under 14 Future Stars basketball team!

Fair Trade Fair

This is an opportunity to buy beautifully crafted gifts made by people from many countries. The products are from workshops where the workers are guaranteed a fair wage for the work they do. Stalls will include jewellery, fashion accessories, household items, toys and Christmas cards. Food stalls will be stocked with Oxfam produce and there will be a coffee shop.

Simon Community fun run

A big thank you to all those pupils who did the fun run last month. We had a team of 43 pupils and staff and we collected €3459.40 which is a terrific total for one school community. Great credit goes to the pupils and staff who gave up their Saturday morning and put in the hard work in collecting the money from their sponsors. A big thank you also to the pupils, staff and parents who so generously supported them. Your help was much appreciated.

Careers Fair

A group of Guidance Counsellors from the locality have come together to organise a careers fair for their senior secondary school students. All senior cycle students and their parents/guardians are welcome to attend.

Since compulsory fifth year careers projects are due in to careers teachers shortly after the fair, this is an excellent opportunity to gather any outstanding information. Both students studying the courses and college administrators will be present to answer any questions.

The fair will be held at St Killian's School, Clonskeagh, on Thursday 22 November from 7.30 p.m. until 9.00 p.m. Representatives from the universities and IT colleges will be present as well as Gardai, Ballyfermot, Colaiste Ide, defence forces, DLCFE, DLIADT, Dundrum, Failte Ireland, Fas, fire brigade, hairdressing, NCI, nursing, Sallynoggin, SCDL and Stillorgan.

Student Council

The Student Council is made up of representatives from each form in every year, who are voted in by his or her own form.

Within the Student Council, a President is elected who acts as the main voice of the Student Council. Next, a Secretary is chosen who records and types the minutes of each meeting. Lastly, a year representative is elected, one for each year group, by his or her year. They speak for their year group as a whole, as well as the President and Secretary, when the Student Council meets with the Principal, Deputy Principal, and the Administrator each year as required.

In the last few years, the Student Council has helped bring about several improvements (or changes!) in the school. For example, new games/P.E. Uniforms, CCTV to help deal with the problem of bullying and theft, summer uniform, and a larger selection of food at lunch - for example the sandwich and healthy options snack machine.

This year, continuing last year’s theme, we hope to improve environmental awareness within the school. We will choose a charity to support and will fundraise for the charity.

The Student Council is the loudest voice the students have within the school. If you have a suggestion to make, a complaint, or a question to ask regarding the school, and how we can improve it, let your form representative know! Or write your suggestion down and put it in the box in the Library. Don’t stay silent if you want something done. Please note the Student Council notice board is on the left side of the Reynolds Hall.

Olwen Reina, President
