Mark Cabena 1989-2007

We record with great sadness the death of Mark, one of our Form 6 students, on 24 August. Mark died suddenly due to a heart defect unknown to him or his family. He was a fine, happy young man with many talents, especially academic, sporting and musical. He enjoyed rugby, played guitar in a band and was involved in the scouting movement. He had been elected a prefect and was looking forward to the role.

Our deepest sympathies are with his family, Peter, Kate and Karl, and all of his friends and relatives. He is greatly missed by us all.

Thanks to Mark's friends for the picture on the left.  The picture on the right is of Mark playing music in school assembly.

Welcome back!

A big welcome back to everybody and a special welcome to new pupils and staff. We have been busy over the summer replacing windows in half the school, installing CCTV in the grounds and some areas inside the building, upgrading the fire safety systems, replacing our water heaters, re-felting roofs to eliminate leaks, installing a new computer network in the Technical and Crafts Building, replacing the computers in the main ICT facilities (one network is complete and the other is ordered for replacement in the near future - our commitment to cutting edge technology), reflooring in the library and kitchen areas, along with general painting and maintenance. Apologies with the few days delay in finishing some of these jobs and the consequent disruption, especially of the Gym. Thanks to Administrator Mr J. Davis and to Dr J. Reid of the Grounds and Property Committee for coordinating all of the work.

Mr J. Hickey

Mr J. Hickey retired during the summer after 37 years teaching Chemistry, Science, Mathematics, and Applied Mathematics at The High School. During that period he also held a variety of positions as Year Head and Coordinator of the pre-university Upper Sixth Year, Assistant Principal in charge of curriculum coordination, timetabler, scholarship coordinator, pupil stationery manager, school trophies coordinator, Fire Officer, and staff representative on the Board of Governors and its committees. We thank Mr Hickey for his dedicated service to the school and wish him well in a long and happy retirement. He is pictured left on the occasion of the presentation of a trophy to Ian Thom when he achieved 1st place in Ireland in the Leaving Certificate in Applied Mathematics, having completed the course in Mr Hickey's class.
