Transition Year trip to Ulster Folk and Transport Museum

Most of the group arrived sleepy but on time at Connolly Station for our trip to Cultra, Co Down. We boarded the train to Belfast, some students entertaining themselves throughout the two hour journey by playing card games, listening to music and eating the entire contents of the canteen car.

Once in Belfast we took another train to Bangor and then walked to the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum. After a brief talk with one of the museum’s main speakers, we set off in groups with elected team leaders to answer question sheets that were provided. The unusual museum was made up of a small town which featured a reality show about life in the late 19th century.

For answering questions the groups had to make their way through central and rural routes in the town, while entering houses, banks and churches learning about how people lived and worked in the late 19th century. We then walked to the Transport Museum where we were left to explore the many interesting exhibits which included a flight simulation system, a Titanic exhibit, a hot air balloon experiment and a car museum featuring the famous De Lorean which was to star in the Back to the Future movies.

We proceeded to get the train back to Belfast and then the final train home to Dublin, all tired but having enjoyed the day immensely. Form 4 would like to say thank you to all teachers and Year Heads who organised the day out.
