Prize DayPrize Day and Parents' Evening took place this year on Wednesday 20 October at 8.00 p.m. . Ronnie Wallace, author of a new history of the Erasmus Smith Trust and The High School "Faithful to our Trust", presented the prizes and addressed the audience, drawing attention to some of the more interesting and colourful periods in the development of the Trust and the school. Mr Wallace's book will be published on 17 November and copies may be ordered from Alan Phelan (archivist) at the school (please include cheque). The pre-publication price is €25 for this 290 page hardback (regular price €30). The Principal's address drew attention to the failure of the government to follow through on all of the reports and consultations which had taken place concerning the education system duringthe last decade. Instead of properly funding the implementation of all of these reports and of the legislation which has been passed, he said that the Department of Education & Science seemed more concerned with perpetual consultation as a substitute for action. A particular worry was the failure fully to implement the report of the Task Force on Physical Sciences, given the critical need of the Irish economy for well educated science graduates into the future. The school has received only 1/7th of the cost of the essential rebuilding of the laboratories and is funding the remainder from private resources. Some of the official photographs taken on Prize Day are available in the office for order, €7 for 5 x 8 and €10 for 10 x 8.
