3DO recently found out that their project
"Watch Out - Pets About!" was the winner of the junior cycle in Ireland
Smithkline Beecham "Health Matters" school awards. These awards have been
sponsored by the company in the UK for the last five years and were extended to The
Netherlands, Belgium and Ireland in 1998. The awards are based on encouraging groups of
students to work in teams to explore and research areas of disease prevention and health
promotion.
3DO (then 2DO) carried out research on the
micro-organisms that are present on the tongues, paws and fur of domestic cats and dogs.
They showed conclusively that it is not advisable to let them eat from the same dishes as
ourselves or to put their paws on the table!
The students have won a cheque for £500
for the Science Department, a watch for each participant and a "scientific" day
out which is still to be arranged. As well as this, their teacher Mrs Dowsett and a
representative group of five pupils have been invited to attend a presentation ceremony at
the Science Museum in London - all expenses paid - to receive the winning trophy. Finally,
the project will be on display at the Science Museum.

class with their teacher Mrs M. Dowsett (left) receive their prize from Chris

Congratulations 3DO!
