"Taps" world premiere a stunning success!

This new show, written by Peter Prendergast, a teacher at The High School, opened here last Thursday evening to a rapturous welcome. A well rehearsed and beautifully choreographed cast did more than justice to what is an exceptional show.
As the show opens, the audience is hit with the unexpected device that one of the lead roles is dead (James, played expertly by Jack Hickey) having been run down by a bus. He appears to his sister Jessie (a great performance from Laura Oliver) who is struggling to gain a place on the school dance team. He espouses in song and spoken word the principles which led him to become a rugby legend and the show unfolds with plenty of "West Side Story" style punks (Romano Fusciardi, Daniel Alkin, Conall Walsh) threatening a betting scam to ensure Jessie doesn't make it.
Throughout the show, there is expert singing and dancing from an enthusiastic cast clad in excellent costumes on a varied and colourful set, backed by a fantastic band masterfully led by Rowan Lacey, and supported by an efficient and slick stage and sound crew. The narcissistic song "I'm beautiful" from Jessie's main rival played by Sohpie Higgs and the unexpected "Footloose" from the hilariously played goofy boyfriend Alan (Fionan Keenan) stand out in one's memory, along with the dancers' superb classroom scene and the tense "All that jazz" leading to the final showdown.
Entertainment is essential in a combined spoken and musical show and attention never wanders for a second here. But this show is so much more than entertainment. There is a philosophy being espoused throughout and the eerie discussion between James and Jessie of what it is like to be dead, along with the pathos invoked by the study of James's parents' reaction to his death, leave the audience celebrating life itself. Some of the audience remarked that they could feel the lump in the throat and the tears rising at more than one point in the show - a credit to the realism and the all emcompassing nature of the show - a credit to producers Ms M. Milne and Ms M. McKevitt as well as to the author.
Well done to everybody involved - a superb show! The newsletter feels pretty sure that we will see more of this show. It has all the ingredients for big time success.

Fair Trade Fair on Saturday

The annual fair run by Transition Year will take place on Saturday December 2 from 10.00 a.m. to 2.30 p.m. With goods ranging from jewellery to Christmas decorations, toys to Christmas cards, household items to chocolate, this is an excellent chance to get some Christmas shopping done. There will be a coffee shop open at the fair selling fair trade tea, coffee and homemade biscuits! Among other things, the Fair Trade mark guarantees that craftsmen and producers have been paid a fair price for their goods and that they have worked in conditions that are safe. For more information on Fair Trade, see www.fairtrade.ie

Leinster selection

Congratulations to Alison Meeke who was selected for the Under 16 Leinster girls hockey team which played in the inter-provincial tournament in Belfast last weekend.

Calling all Form Groups!

The Habitat for Humanity group is selling "bricks" on their Habitat House which is on display in the Reynolds Hall, as advertising space. Each brick costs €100. They are asking that each form buy a brick (€4 per student) to help raise money to build a house for a disadvantaged family in Romania. Thanks to all in Form 1R who have already purchased a brick! See Ms Carson for more details.

Young Scientist

Congratulations to our entrants this year for their project which has been selected for the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition at the RDS in January 2007. They are investigating the cause of house fires due to the buildup of static electricity in laundry. 500 projects were chosen from a record entry of 1278 this year and the judges commented that the selection was very difficult due to the high quality of the entries.
